What Makes It Healthy For Babies
Oatmeal is full of soluble fiber, including a special kind called beta-glucan, which promotes healthy digestion (poops!) and is good for gut health. Oatmeal is also full of important nutrients, including manganese, iron, zinc, and B vitamins.
In addition to oats, this baked oatmeal is made with other wholesome ingredients, including egg, peanut butter, milk, and flaxseed which offer protein and healthy fat.
This recipe is also a good source of several potential allergens, including peanut, egg, and milk. Research now shows that exposing babies to allergens early and often could help prevent food allergies!

What You'll Need
- A very ripe banana (the browner the banana, the sweeter it will be!)
- Peanut butter powder - you can also use regular creamy peanut butter (see Recipe Variations)
- Egg
- Milk - cow's milk or any alternative milk you prefer
- Oats - rolled oats or old fashioned oats, gluten-free certified if necessary
- Flaxseed (optional)
- Cinnamon
Helpful Equipment: Mixing bowl, fork or whisk, loaf pan, parchment paper
How To Make It
- Mash the banana in a bowl.
- Stir in the egg, milk and peanut powder until well combined.
- Stir in the oats, cinnamon and flaxseed.
- Pour into a loaf pan lined with parchment paper.
- Bake at 350°F for 25-30 minutes.
- Cool before removing from the pan. Then cut into 1-inch wide "fingers".
Recipe Variations
- Regular Peanut Butter: If you'd rather use regular peanut butter, substitute ⅓ cup natural creamy peanut butter for the peanut powder and reduce the milk to ¾ cup.
- Flaxseed: This is totally optional, but adds healthy fat. You can also use chia seeds if you have those on hand.
- Mix-ins: If you are making this for older kiddos or adults, you can add chocolate chips, coconut, or chopped peanuts!
- Double Batch: This recipe is easily doubled for an 8" or 9" square baking dish. Keep the baking time the same.
Storage and Reheating
Store cooled oatmeal in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. It also freezes well for up to 3 months.
Reheat oatmeal "fingers" in the microwave on a microwave-safe dish (such as glass or ceramic) for 30 seconds. Make sure to test the temperature before serving to baby!
How To Serve Baked Oatmeal For Baby Led Weaning
Cut cooled oatmeal bake into 1-inch wide strips, or "fingers" for younger babies around 6 months old. These are easy for baby to grasp and bring to her mouth. For older babies with a pincer grasp or learning to use utensils, cut oatmeal into smaller pieces, about the size of your fingernail, and let baby pick up or try to use a soft fork to pick up pieces.

FAQ
Look for brands with no added sugar, and only peanut if possible. My favorite is Crazy Richards!
You can use natural creamy peanut butter (look for kinds with only peanuts, or only peanuts and salt). Look for the "Recipe Variations" section above for instructions on using peanut butter.
Yes. Cow's milk shouldn't be given as a beverage to babies because breastmilk or formula are more nutrient dense. But it's perfectly fine to use in recipes like this one!

Love the taste! What should the inside consistency of these be like? Mine are a little soggy, does that mean I didn’t bake it long enough?
Kaleigh says
Glad you love it! The texture should be soft but still hold together if that makes sense. If it's a little soggy I would bake longer next time, or you can try a little larger pan. Also, if you happened to use frozen bananas, be sure to drain the liquid that seeps out when thawing! Also a quick ask - would you mind leaving a star rating? 🙂
Shelby Crosby says
Love them and my baby does too!
Brittany says
My 1 yo loves these for breakfast with a side of berries! Have you tried adding really thinly sliced apple ?
Kaleigh says
So glad y'all love these, Brittany! I haven't, but I don't see why you couldn't. For a 1 yo you could add grated apple or dice it small. I just finished an apple baked oatmeal recipe that will be coming soon 🙂

Love it!! My 10 month olds loved it!
