Why Avocado Toast Is Great For Babies
Avocado is a great first food for babies because it is so nutrient dense. It is full of essential nutrients for baby's growth and development, such as health monounsaturated fats, folate, fiber, and antioxidants. Toast also happens to be a great food for baby led weaning or babies in the finger food stage because it is easy for them to pick up with a palmar grasp and serves as an easy, affordable vehicle for all kinds of nutritious toppers. Put the two together, and you've got a quick, easy and healthy breakfast that is great for both mama and baby!
Ingredients
- Bread - I like whole wheat bread, but you can use almost any bread you like as long as it isn't too hard or crusty and doesn't contain honey.
- Avocado - Choose one that is ripe enough to easily mash. A ripe avocado should give just a little when you gently squeeze it.
- Optional nutrition boosters: Hemp seeds, ground flaxseed, finely chopped pepitas, sesame seeds (pick one)
How To Make It
- Toast the bread lightly. I use the #2 setting on the toaster. You want bread that is lightly golden but still pliable.
- Mash the avocado. Remove the skin and pit and mash the flesh with a fork.
- Spread the avocado onto the toast.
- Cut into BLW friendly finger shapes the width of 1-2 adult fingers.
Tips and Variations
- Sometimes ¼ of a small avocado is enough, and sometimes you need ½. It just depends on the size of the bread and the avocado. Use as much as you want.
- If the crust on the bread is very dry, hard, or crusty, cut it off before serving toast to baby. Otherwise, you can leave it on.
- For gluten-free, use your favorite gluten-free bread.
- This is best eaten right away, and neither toast nor avocado store well.
How To Serve Avocado Toast for BLW
For baby led weaning babies 6+ months or babies in the finger food stage, cut avocado toast into strips the width of 1-2 adult fingers. Once baby has a pincer grasp (around 9 months), you can cut it into bite-size pieces, or continue offering strips.
For a nutritionally balanced breakfast, serve with an egg and some fruit served in a baby-friendly shape!

Avocado Toast for Baby
Avocado toast is a great way to introduce avocado for baby led weaning! Here's how to make this easy and nutritious staple, plus how to serve it for blw or as a finger food.
- Prep Time: 5 minutes
- Cook Time: 1 minute
- Total Time: 6 minutes
- Yield: 1-2 servings 1x
- Category: breakfast
- Method: toaster
- Cuisine: American
Ingredients
- 1 slice bread (I like whole wheat)
- ¼ to ½ small avocado
- optional: hemp seeds, ground flaxseed, sesame seeds, or finely chopped pepitas
Instructions
- Lightly toast the bread in the toaster. I use about a 2 setting. You don't want crunchy toast. It should be just barely golden and still pliable.
- Remove the skin from the avocado and mash with a fork.
- Spread the avocado mash on the toast.
- If the crusts on the toast are very hard or crusty, cut them off, otherwise you can leave them on. Cut toast into strips the width of 1-2 adult fingers.
- Optional: Sprinkle on any extras for a little nutritional boost.
Notes
- Bread: I like whole wheat bread or sourdough. You can use almost any bread you like, but avoid anything too hard or crusty like French bread, as well as anything with honey for babies under 1 year. You also want a shape that you can cut into finger-length strips.
- Choosing an avocado: Avocados should give a little when gently squeezed, but shouldn't be mushy or feel hollow.
- Avocado toast is best enjoyed right away as it does not store well.
