Why You'll Love This Pea Avocado Mash
This pea and avocado mash is made of just 4 super simple ingredients - though it can even be made with 2 - and only takes about 5 minutes to make! Green peas are high in protein and fiber, while avocados are high in healthy fat and fiber. They are both rich in essential nutrients for baby, like folate and iron, making this easy spread incredibly healthy for little ones. It is also tasty, giving babies a little taste of new flavors like lemon and mint, without being overwhelming.
What You'll Need
- Green peas - frozen peas are easy to keep around and prepare year-round!
- Avocado - Go for one that feels slightly firm, but gives a little when gently squeezed
- Lemon
- Fresh mint - optional, but adds nice flavor
Equipment: If you're making a mash, all you'll need are a bowl, knife, and fork. If you'd like to make a puree, you'll need a food processor or blender.
How To Make It
Here is a quick rundown. For full amount and instructions, visit the recipe card at the bottom of the page.
- Cook the peas. I cover them with water in a microwave-safe bowl and microwave for 1 minute. You can also steam or boil the peas if you'd rather. Drain and cool the peas completely.
- Mash the peas and avocado together with a fork in a small bowl.
- Squeeze the juice from a lemon wedge into the mixture and stir in finely chopped fresh mint, if you're using it.
To Make a Puree: After cooking and cooling the peas, simply blend everything in the food processor or blender, adding water ass needed to reach your desired consistency.
Storage
This doesn't store very well due to the avocado, which will brown in the refrigerator after an hour or so. But it will not be unsafe to eat if you choose to refrigerate it for a day or two (make sure it's covered).
How To Serve Pea Avocado Mash for Baby Led Weaning
For baby led weaning, you have a few serving options:
- Serve the mash in a rimmed plate or bowl and allow baby to scoop it up with his hands
- Pre-load on a soft spoon that you hand to baby or set on the tray

Pea Avocado Mash For Babies
This pea avocado mash for babies is super nutritious and so easy to make! Great for both spoon fed babies and baby led weaning, it is high in protein and healthy fat, making in great to add to baby's meals.
- Prep Time: 5 minutes
- Cook Time: 1 minute
- Total Time: 6 minutes
- Yield: 1-2 servings 1x
- Category: spread
- Method: microwave
- Cuisine: baby/toddler
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp frozen green peas
- ¼ small avocado
- lemon wedge
- 2 small mint leaves, very finely chopped (optional)
Instructions
- Cook peas according to preference. I typically cover with water in a microwave-safe dish and microwave for 1 minute. Drain and let cool completely.
- In a small bowl, mash the peas and avocado together with a fork.
- Add a squeeze of lemon and mint, if using, and mix to combine.
Notes
- For a puree instead of mash: Blend everything in a food processor instead of mashing with a fork. You may need to add a little water to get it smooth.
- Storage: Because the avocado will brown, this does not store well. It will not be unsafe to eat after storing in the refrigerator for a couple of days, but it will turn brown.
- To Serve Baby Led Weaning Style: Serve on a preloaded soft spoon, in a rimmed plate for scooping with hands, or spread on toast fingers or pancake strips.
- Flavor Variations: Try lime instead of lemon, or mix up the herbs with finely chopped basil, dill, parsley, or chives.
