Pear season is one of my favorites, and it's a good thing, because the fruit selection in the fall and winter isn't as various as in summer months - you're basically down to apples, bananas, citrus, and pears for blw-friendly choices. Here is one of my favorite ways to prepare pears for baby led weaning (and for myself!). Pears get sautéd in cinnamon for a sweet, flavorful treat that is delicious on oatmeal, for dessert, or to share with baby.

Why You'll Love Cinnamon Pears

Pears are naturally sweet and nutritious. They are high in fiber (making them great for constipation in babies) and contain micronutrients and antioxidants. With only 3 ingredients, this delicious recipe enhances the sweetness of pears with warm cinnamon for extra flavor without added sugar.

These cinnamon sautéd pears are a great texture and shape for baby led weaning. If you're spoon feeding and would rather make a puree, you can do that, too! They are easy to make ahead in a large batch and just a delicious for mama as they are for baby - use them to top your oatmeal, on pancakes, or as dessert!

What You'll Need

sliced pears on a wooden cutting board with a paring knife, oil, and cinnamon beside it.
  • Fresh pears - any variety will work
  • Oil - I like to use unrefined coconut oil or a neutral oil such as avocado oil. Butter would also work.
  • Cinnamon
  • Water

Helpful Equipment: Sharp knife (a paring knife is good here), skillet (I love cast iron), spatula

Tip: To determine if a pear is ripe and ready to use, gently press the neck. if it gives slightly to light pressure, it is ripe!

How To Make Them

  1. Peel, core and slice pears into ½-inch slices.
  2. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-low heat.
  3. Add the pears. Stir to coat, then add the cinnamon and water. Stir.
  4. Cover and simmer over low to medium low heat until pears are soft, about 10-15 minutes. Stir every once in a while to prevent sticking, adding more water if needed.

Storage and Reheating

Store cooked, cooled pears in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. To reheat, gently simmer on the stove until warmed through, or heat in a microwave-safe dish for 15-20 seconds in the microwave. Always test the temperature before serving to baby!

Serve these pears as-is in slices for younger blw babies after cooking - make sure they have cooled enough! You can also cut them into bite-sized pieces for babies with a pincer grasp to practice picking up or using utensils.

Spoon Feeding? How To Make Them Into a Puree

After cooking, these pears can be pureed for spoon-feeding. Simply blend with a blender or food processor with a little water as needed, or pass through a wire strainer or food mill until you achieve the desired consistency.
