What You'll Need
- Apples - Use any variety you like!
- Oil - I like to use coconut oil. Avocado oil, olive oil or butter work too.
- Cinnamon
Helpful equipment: Sharp knife, cutting board, nonstick skillet or well-seasoned cast iron skillet
How To Make Them
- Peel and slice the apples into about ½-inch thick slices.
- Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the oil.
- Add apples and cook, stirring, until they begin to soften and release juices. If they don't release any juices, you may need to add a couple teaspoons of water to prevent sticking.
- Add cinnamon and continue to cook, stirring, until apples are soft, about 5-8 minutes. Adjust the heat as needed to maintain a low simmer until they are done.
- Test the texture and temperature by smashing a slice of apple between your thumb and index finger before serving to baby.
Tip: If you don't have a nonstick skillet or well-seasoned cast iron, you may need to add a little more oil or butter to prevent sticking!
Storage and Reheating
Store leftover cinnamon apples in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.
Reheat, covered, over low heat on the stove until warmed through. Or heat for 15-30 seconds in the microwave. Test the temperature before serving to baby!
How To Serve Them To Babies
For younger babies (about 6-8 months) serve cinnamon apple slices whole. Once babies develop the pincer grasp around 9-11 months, you can cut them up into small pieces about the size of your pinky nail. Serve alongside pancakes or toast fingers, or add to oatmeal or yogurt!
