Apples can make a great first food to add to babies' meals, but they must bee cooked first, since raw apples can be a choking hazard. That's where this recipe for cinnamon sautéd apples comes in! These apples are not only a great texture for baby led weaning, but they are also deliciously flavored with cinnamon, so baby gets to explore new spices, too.

What You'll Need

  • Apples - Use any variety you like!
  • Oil - I like to use coconut oil. Avocado oil, olive oil or butter work too.
  • Cinnamon

Helpful equipment: Knife, cutting board, nonstick skillet or well-seasoned cast iron skillet

How To Make Them

  1. Peel and slice the apples into about ½-inch thick slices.
  2. Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the oil.
  3. Add apples and cook, stirring, until they begin to soften and release juices. If they don't release any juices, you may need to add a couple teaspoons of water to prevent sticking.
  4. Add cinnamon and continue to cook, stirring, until apples are soft, about 5-8 minutes. Adjust the heat as needed to maintain a low simmer until they are done.
  5. Test the texture and temperature by smashing a slice of apple between your thumb and index finger before serving to baby.

Tip: If you don't have a nonstick skillet or well-seasoned cast iron, you may need to add a little more oil or butter to prevent sticking!

Storage and Reheating

Store leftover cinnamon apples in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days, or freeze for up to 3 months.

Reheat, covered, over low heat on the stove until warmed through. Or heat for 15-30 seconds in the microwave. Test the temperature before serving to baby!

How To Serve Them To Babies

For younger babies (about 6-8 months) serve cinnamon apple slices whole. Once babies develop the pincer grasp around 9-11 months, you can cut them up into small pieces about the size of your pinky nail. Serve alongside pancakes or toast, or add to oatmeal or yogurt!

  • Author: Kaleigh
  • Prep Time: 5 minutes
  • Cook Time: 8 minutes
  • Total Time: 13 minutes
  • Yield: about 1 cup 1x
  • Category: side dish
  • Method: stovetop
  • Cuisine: American

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 apples, any variety
  • 2 tsp oil or butter (I like coconut oil for this recipe)
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2-4 teaspoon water, or as needed

Instructions

  1. Peel and slice the apples into about ½-inch thick slices.
  2. Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add the oil or butter.

Notes

  • Cook time: Some varieties of apples may take longer than others to become soft, so adjust the cooking time as needed to achieve a soft texture.
  • Skillet: If you don't have a nonstick skillet or well-seasoned cast iron, you may need to add more oil or butter to prevent sticking.
  • Variations: Add any other spices you may like, such as ginger, nutmeg, cardamom, or pumpkin pie spice.
  • Storage: Store apples in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
